Leigh Beasley Gillis, Interim Pastor, is a native of Norfolk and a graduate of Virginia Tech, Norfolk State University (M.A.) and Union Presbyterian Seminary (M. Div.). She has served 6 intentional interims over the past 25 years, as well as 2 installed pastorates and 4 years as an Associate Executive Presbyter. She is interested in the use of Bowen Family Systems theory in the congregational setting, helping to foster Healthy Congregations. Leigh is excited to be serving alongside the people of St. Andrew during this transitional time. She and her husband, John, have family all over Virginia and in Canada and England.
Rev. Ugarte' is a Dallas, TX native with a BA-Social Sciences from SMU; and an MDiv from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He is a former Navy Chaplain and has served as a pastor in several churches. He and his wife, Cynthia, have been married for thirty years and have two adult children, Gabriella and David.
Beth has been a member of St. Andrew since 1990 and joined our staff in 2004. She is responsible for educational ministries at the church for all ages. Beth is a native of West Virginia and holds a BA in English from St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC, a masters degree in Library Science from UNC-CH, and a masters degree in Christian Education from Union Presbyterian Seminary. She and her husband Steve live in an old farmhouse in Suffolk which they rescued from the wrecking ball, and which, thirty years later, is still a work in progress. Their two children, Anna and Will, grew up at St. Andrew. Beth sees faith formation as a lifelong process during which God continues to form and redeem us.
Mr. Parrish serves as the Minister of Music at St Andrew Presbyterian Church in Suffolk, where he conducts both the adult choir and several English hand bell choirs while overseeing the entire music department and its staff. Joey is proud to have been a member of the St Andrew family for over 15 years and cherishes the friendships that have been forged during that time. Mr. Parrish also serves as an Assistant Principal at Western Branch Intermediate in Chesapeake, Virginia. As an administrator, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the school, enforces school-wide discipline and assists with the instructional program at the elementary school level. Prior to serving at Western Branch Intermediate, he served as an Assistant Principal at Great Bridge High School where he was instrumental in reviving a tradition of excellence in both the academic and extracurricular activities. Prior to joining administration, Mr. Parrish served as Choral Director at Grassfield High School. At Grassfield High School he conducted three choirs, a Freshmen Choir, a small Chamber choir and the GFHS Varsity Singers. He also taught a beginning Music Theory and Advanced Placement Music Theory class where students scored above the National average on the AP test each year. Mr. Parrish previously was the Choral Director at Hickory Middle School for eight years. Under his leadership, the choirs were some of the finest in the state and earned Regional, State and National Honors. Under his direction, students excelled in all aspects of music education and many former students are now currently teaching music or performing professionally.
Mr. Parrish received his Bachelor of Music Education from Christopher Newport University and his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Regent University. He is a member of MENC, the American Choral Directors Association, and was also the founding President of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity chapter at Christopher Newport University. Mr. Parrish has been selected to speak at various conferences around the region and has presented workshops and guest clinics around the country.
Joey and his lovely wife Dawn live in Chesapeake, VA with their three children Kelly (17), Connor (13) and Colby (5).
Ms. Angie is a third generation and charter member of St. Andrew. She has served as our youth director since 2015. She earned her BS degree in Psychology from Old Dominion University in 1990. Angie is married to Rob Baurle, who works as an aerospace engineer for NASA/Langley Research Center. They have a blended family with four grown children: Kristen, Tyler, Lauren, and Jordan and a teenage daughter, Sarah. Angie enjoys reading and dancing in her spare time.
Lisa Cross is our volunteer director of Older Adult Ministries. Raised in Richmond VA, she is currently a Commissioned Ruling Elder here at St. Andrew, a designation awarded after the completion of courses from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary and from Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond. As a Commissioned Ruling Elder, she has Presbytery permission to officiate at Baptisms and for Communion services. She enjoys preaching in area churches and leads the Presbyterian Women morning circle Bible Study at our church.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, she has been in the field of Recreation Ministry for many years. Scheduling, organizing, leading events and activities are second-nature to her because of her background. Her goal for the Older Adults group, known as the eXtra Years of Zest group, aka the XYZ's, is to promote friendships, encourage participation and fellowship within the church community, and engage those over 55 in a variety of interesting activities.
Her husband Harry is very active in our church, also. They have 3 married adult children and 7 grandchildren.
The Carnegies are charter members of St. Andrew Presbyterian. Both Carol and Jim graduated from Christopher Newport University in 1977. Carol received her Masters in Reading and Jim received his Masters in School Administration from Old Dominion University. They enjoyed a career with Suffolk Public Schools. Carol was an elementary teacher and academic coach. Jim was also a teacher and assistant principal. Following retirement, they became preschool directors in 2015.
Carol and Jim are also active in the ministry of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Carol is the church librarian, member of Presbyterian Women and teaches in Crosswalk. Jim volunteers at the Soup Kitchen, member of Presbyterian Men, and shepherds in Crosswalk. Together they have raised 3 children and are now grandparents to 6.
Beverly Lambert is our English church Secretary and has been working at St. Andrew for eight years. She is the go-to person for most administrative tasks and enjoys helping church members, officers & staff with anything and everything! Beverly was born in beautiful Devon, England and is a world traveler. She also lived in Japan for three years. Bev is married and has one daughter who is a college senior studying mechanical engineering in North Carolina State University. Bev loves travelling and visiting new places, photography, and enjoys anything to do with history especially if it involves exploring historic buildings & gardens!
Steve is a retired 35 year Civil Service employee for the US Navy where his job duties included maintenance, repairs, rehab and upgrades on ships. After serving several years at St Andrew as a Property Deacon, it seemed a natural transition to continue monitoring the facility maintenance of the church.
Ruth Harrel is a childcare provider for St. Andrew, and you'll find her in the nurserymornings and nights. Ruth is a native Virginian who is also a Preschool teacher with Suffolk Public Schools. She has a BS from Norfolk State University and an M.Ed. from Cambridge College. Ruth is married with a grown son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law and grandson. She has two dogs and loves to go thrift store shopping and do paint parties.
Betty Hare is a childcare provider for St. Andrew and is a mainstay in ourmorning nursery. Betty, a native of New Jersey, has also been associated with St. Andrew's weekday Preschool for ten years and currently teaches three year olds there. Betty is mom to three adult children and ten pets of assorted species.
