These Advent studies will be based on the book, Rejoicing in Hope, by James A. Harnish. The first Sunday of Advent is December 2, 2018. (There will be no Sunday school classes on December 30.)

All four Sunday adult church school classes will look at what it means to rejoice in hope as they explore what God did in the lives of some of the ordinary people of the Christmas story.  Elizabeth and Zechariah had lived into old age and had just about given up hope of ever having children, when they discovered that Elizabeth was pregnant. Their child would grow up to be John the Baptist. Mary, a young nobody from a nowhere town, learned that she was to be the mother of the Messiah. Her response? “… let it be with me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38) Joseph had every legal right to send his pregnant fiancé packing – or worse – and yet he, too, responded in obedience to God’s greater purpose. Anna and Simeon, two devout old Jews, had waited their whole lives to see the promised Messiah. When they saw the 40-day-old baby in the arms of his parents at the temple, they recognized the fulfillment of God’s promise immediately and praised the Lord.
Join with us as we deepen our understanding of what it means to live into the hope of the Christmas season as we grow to know these characters more deeply. In some cases, Pastor Gillian’s Advent sermons will parallel the studies as well.
